Course Description:

Oral disease in the pediatric population is chronic, widespread, and can lead to serious consequences in a child’s overall health; in the same way, when overall health is poor, oral health suffers. This course highlights ways to prevent dental disease and ease some of the challenges of treating pediatric patients by including assessment of a child’s general well-being. The course will also introduce methods of pediatric risk-based care that can be easily incorporated into any practice to improve patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the effects of body mass index on children’s overall and oral health.
  • Examine the influence of motivational interviewing and self-management goals in creating positive behaviors and habits in the pediatric patient.
  • Determine the impact of caries risk assessment on diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Identify simple ways to implement whole-child risk-based care into general practice.
