Hardev M. Singh DMD, BS


Dr. Singh was awarded his dental degree from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine, while being a dental student he was awarded the HPSP from the United States Army. As a commissioned dental officer, he was awarded the Army Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. After serving the Army, Dr. Singh was an Associate Professor at Western University providing clinical dental care with a focus on complex exodontia and pre-prosthetic surgery. While working in academia he was the owner of a dental practice and pursued in applying for a license in oral sedation, however his passion to continue to advance himself led him to become a Periodontic resident at the prestigious Loma Linda University with the focus on advanced periodontal surgery and implant therapy. He still holds his academic appointment at Western University as an adjunct faculty. One of the components of his residency training was complex exodontia with various flap designs and preparing the extraction sites for possible immediate implants. At this time, he is a periodontist who works with various offices in providing periodontal therapy and implant treatment, but also believes in educating and training all staff members on periodontal treatments. Dr Singh is currently an adjunct faculty at Western University and has numerous publications while collaborating with other clinicians.


Medical emergencies in the dental office

Medical Emergencies can occur in the dental office at any given time, and providers need to understand how to handle them efficiently. The ability to handle a medical emergency in a timely fashion is critical, and it comes from understanding and the ability to recognize these emergencies. This lecture will cover these topics, and a complete understanding of the most common type of dental emergencies that can occur in the dental office is important.  Listing all the necessary drugs in the basic emergency drug kit, and all pertinent equipment to be kept in the dental office is crucial.  Basic management protocols will be described for related cardiac issues, and an understanding how to minimize and prevent emergencies in the dental office will be explained.



Topics that will be covered include:

  1. Reviewing a patient’s medical history to prevent emergencies, being able to prepare adequately and applying some basic understanding of certain medical conditions in aiding the practitioner.
  2. Knowing which emergencies occur most frequently and what causes them as well as preventative measures
  3. Know which primary medication should be given for each presented emergency as well as method of action, drug doses and precautions
  4. Understanding the importance of adequate documentation and what to document properly after a medical emergency occurring
