Course Description:
Management and Prevention of Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office
Brief Summary
This course equips dental professionals with the knowledge and skills to recognize, prevent, and respond effectively to medical emergencies in the dental setting. Emphasis is placed on identifying risk factors during patient assessment, implementing preventive measures, and applying evidence-based protocols for immediate management. Attendees will gain confidence in handling emergencies such as syncope, allergic reactions, cardiac events, and hypoglycemia, ensuring patient safety and compliance with regulatory standards.
Learning Objectives
Identify common medical emergencies encountered in dental practice and the underlying risk factors associated with each.
Implement preventive strategies through thorough medical history reviews, risk assessments, and patient monitoring protocols.
Demonstrate appropriate emergency management techniques, including use of emergency drugs, equipment, and Basic Life Support (BLS) skills.
Develop an office-wide emergency preparedness plan, including staff training, communication protocols, and mock-drill evaluations.
DR HARDEV SINGH
Dr. Singh was awarded his dental degree from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine, while being a dental student he was awarded the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) from the United States Army. As a commissioned dental officer, he was awarded the Army Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. After serving the Army, Dr. Singh was an Associate Professor at Western University providing clinical dental care with a focus on complex exodontia and pre-prosthetic surgery.
While working in academia he was the owner of a dental practice, however his passion for surgery made him advance himself by pursuing a Periodontic residency at the prestigious Loma Linda University where he was trained by worldwide clinicians. His residency involved a focus on advanced periodontal surgery & implant therapy and graduated as chief resident in his department. One of the components of his residency training was the alleviation of anxiety with oral sedation, but also intravenous (I.V.) sedation training to aid in the treatment of fearful patients.
At this time, he is Board Certified in Periodontology and Dental Implant Surgery and is a travelling periodontist who works with various offices in providing periodontal surgery. He also believes in educating and training all staff members on medical emergencies and is a key proponent in the importance of proper training. Dr Singh is currently an adjunct faculty at Western University and has numerous publications while collaborating with other clinicians.
